It is very normal nowadays for homeowners pursuing a green lifestyle to have LED lights. You might not have heard yet that dimmable LED lights are now available as well. The ligthing industry worked very hard at figuring out how to produce dimmable LED lights and they succeeded at last. Dimmable LEDs are specifically made to work with special dimmer switches and bases. Don't combine a regular LED light with a with dimmer switch.
Incandescent lights use approximately five times more energy as LEDs. A 12W LED bulb can be used in lieu of a 60W incandescent bulb. The savings can be even more (up to 90%) if you have LED light bulbs for directiional lighting, such as to illuminate a picture.
Additional advantages of LED lights are listed below:
- Mercury is not used in manufacturing LED lights
- A fraction of the heat is radiated by LED bulbs, compared to incandescent lights. That is especially important in Southern climates where homes are air-conditioned.
- Long life: An LED bulb is long lasting and will not require replacement for many years.
- If your home uses a PV solar system, or wind power generator, the LED ligths are the way to go.
Regular lights do cost less than LEDs. Overall however, LEDs do cost less, because they use considerably less eletricity and they do last so much longer.
The wide offering of LED lights available now, especially the addition of dimmable LEDs, makes it possible to find the ideal LED for just about any situation.
