Living in Harmony with Economical and Renewable Energy Sources for Sustainable Homes

Gradually, we have exploited the resources of the planet so much that now we are huffing and puffing to balance everything again.

Humanity, as one, is now looking for ways to reduce its impact on its surroundings. Man, who once prided himself for being the conqueror is now making a genuine effort to live in harmony with the environment around him. Industries are employing innovative techniques to reduce their emissions and markets have started recycling more.

So, why shouldn't the common man pitch in through whatever means he can find? The way to pitch in towards saving our planet for people like you and me is to live in sustainable homes. The automatic reaction after being told about sustainable homes is to try to understand the concept while at the same time try to see if the whole idea is even feasible. The following are some answers pertaining to sustainable homes for the uninitiated.

Definition

The most basic definition of sustainable homes would be that these are houses that are designed in a way that they have the least impact on their surrounding environment. The whole purpose behind sustainable homes is to conserve as many resources as possible. The basic principle behind these houses is reusing, reducing and recycling.

Sustainable homes are built with recycled and environmentally friendly materials so that they become a part of the environment instead of dominating it. Another aspect of sustainable homes is that they incorporate the well being of the inhabitants. Some methods of achieving this include having a house that promotes ventilation, allows appropriate sunlight, and keeps the temperature at manageable levels.

Another typical characteristic of sustainable homes that is not well known is that they are designed with much involvement of the house owner. Hence, the result is that most sustainable homes are designed in a way that extra rooms can be added to them at a later stage without much breaking down of the existing structures.

My colleague who had such a house designed three years ago has already added two extra rooms and claims that their use of heaters is almost zero. In contrast, I end up using a heater for 8 months in a year while living in the same city.

Energy Sources:

Sustainable homes are houses or buildings that are made in a way that they are energy efficient and hence use economical and renewable sources of energy.

Sustainable homes use alternative sources of energy such as solar power, wind energy or magnetic energy. These energy sources are not only environmentally friendly but would also result in the owners of the sustainable homes having significant financial savings.

This is possible because these economic energy sources, if used appropriately, can single handedly take care of the energy needs of the house. At the very least, solar power, wind energy or magnetism can account for around 25 percent of the house's energy needs which means a drastic reduction in the utility bills.

As my colleague told me when I asked him the reason for getting a sustainable home designed, ‘We owe our children a better world to live in and hence should be even more circumspect of how we affect our surroundings'. Reducing carbon footprints is the only way to achieve this and sustainable homes are prime examples of such endeavours. Sustainable homes are the wave of the future and, essentially, the only hope for its arrival.
